Protein powders on a low carb diet

With winter fast approaching, more and more men will start preparing their bodies for an intense workout and embark on a low carb diet, which will give them the body they want next summer. With recent reports that protein powder could increase a man’s life span by as much as 10 years, it will be no surprise when orders for such products rocket.

If you walk into a health shop, you are faced with an overwhelming assortment of protein powders which usually leave you wondering where you start. Firstly read the label, the first thing you will notice is there are carb filled powders for bodybuilders and low carbed powders.

Low carb protein powders come in a range of types, for example there are soy based products, egg based products, an egg and milk blend or a soy/whey blend. The good thing about protein powders is that you are not just limited to making shakes, they can also be used to make baked goods or for breading.

The recipe you are trying to make will dictate what sort of protein powder you should use, some are flour-like and are mediocre in a shake, whereas some are flavourful in as a shake but coagulate if cooked.

If you are looking to bread either poultry or fish unflavoured soy or a soy/whey blend can be used a substitute for flour. Dip the food into beaten egg and then dredge it in the protein powder before frying. Alternatively, you can mix egg, cream and water to the powder to create a batter.

For baked goods, let your recipe be your guide. Protein powder can be used alongside ingredients such as gluten flour and oat flour. When combined, they give a finer, more cake like texture to desserts than soy and soy/wheat blends do perfect for small cakes and cookies.

Protein powders can add variety to a low carb menu, but they should act purely as add-ons, enhancers and/or extras. They should not be the core of your diet, real food should form the basis of your diet.
